We should have known it would be an unusual Club meeting! I mean when your Club Prez arrives clad in a classic Paul-Hartley-Pink tie… well you know what I mean. There were murmurs of dissension, but the reason for the bright tie and smile on our Prez’ face only became obvious later.
The meeting was launched with a very inspirational moment by Bruce Drake, who left us thinking about how what we received in life was probably more valuable than what we wanted. Ed Glazener led us in song (boy can that Rotarian wave his arms!), accompanied by Keyboard-King Joe Zakowski. Next up was our favorite reporter of news, Bert “His-Jokes-Will-Make-U-Groan” Wahlen. After telling Bert that he “sometimes wonders” about him (quite rightly), Prez Stan invited Tyler Cramer to introduce our visiting students from the Crawford High. Next up was Darren Cecil, who was awarded his blue badge in something of a record time! Frank Arrington introduced our three newest Club 33 Fellows: Marten Barry, Joe Craver, and Tom Gable. Lewis Linson offered his last report on our very successful Rotarians-at-Work day. While the Club seem glad not to have to listen to Lewis again, there was much applause for the 96 Rotarians and their more than 100 family/friends/Rotaract volunteers who made such a difference on so many projects on that day. Bill McColl introduced the Librarian from Hoover High and talked about the Read-To-Succeed program on May 19. Please call Bill or the Rotary office if you have the time to read to students at this most worthwhile event. John Morrell talked about the upcoming May 20 Rotary night at the Padres Club project fundraiser. John auctioned off the right to throw out the first pitch to David Oates for $500 smackers, while Jim M. Hughes put down $100 big ones for the honor of raising the flag at the game.
Then poor Kimberley Layton got wacked for $250 for promoting a walk-on fundraiser opportunity for an upcoming play, the proceeds of which will go to support the Starlight’s Kids-Free Program. Apparently, the Club continues the tradition of “no good deed goes unpunished!” With all the housekeeping and fine-fun out of the way, our happy Prez finally bubbled up with the reasons for his smiles… he has a new grandson! As a result of this wonderful event, one can only guess he was feeling “in the pink” when he selected his tie (move over Bert… you’ve got competition!).
Our chair of the day, Barbara Bry, brought us an excellent program. Larry Bock, who is something of a legend in the Life Science community, reviewed the recently helped Science Festival from concept to implementation. Based on a successful European model, the Science Festival was a month-long series of events highlighting the excitement of science, primarily geared to younger students. Participating in the Festival was a list of the most prominent science based companies in the region. The festival concluded with a huge fair in Balboa Park attended by more than 75,000 San Diegans, including several Club members and their families, putting excitement back into science! With the program finished, Prez Stan reminded us to attend the upcoming Club Walk on Mission Bay on May 23. Please call the office to sign up and for any details.
