Marvin Hamlisch
April 30, 2009

Pres. Stan called the meeting to order, introducing T.D. Rolf for our inspirational moment. This was followed by Greg Zinser on the piano and Steve Hubbard leading us in the Star Spangled Banner. Bert Wahlen, in his news report, talked about Congress, the NFL, and show business.

Kevin Ward introduced visiting students from Crawford High and Mt. Everest, a home schooling organization. Then we all sang Happy Birthday to Walter Barrett, a youngster of 90.

Craig Evanco handed out well-earned Club 33 fellowships to John Ahlering, Jo Dee Jacob, Dean Crowder, and Greg Zinser. The club thanks each of you for your cumulative $1,500 donations.

President Stan then exchanged flags with Diane-Sophie Angles, who is moving here from France. Jim Groen followed up with an announcement about a job shadowing program with Hoover High Interactors. Contact Debe Berger or Jim Groen if you have a job-shadowing opportunity. Then it was time to raise some money--$500 from Shandon Harbour and a combined $500 from power couple Katherine Kennedy and Robert Horsman.

Chair of the Day Ward Gill welcomed our visitor from the farthest, giving several gifts from his store of musical gifts from the San Diego Symphony, then, introduced our speaker, famed songwriter Marvin Hamlisch, who immediately started cracking wise, while filling us with tidbits about music and musicians. Example—a classical musician will generally play from the score as written, while a pop musician will write all sorts of reminders on the score. Example—after we gave gifts to the visiting Rotarian from farthest away, he said that Rotary does what Jews do—eat cheesecake (our dessert of the day) and give away prizes. Example—he asked why we had a Japanese piano instead of a Steinway.

He played a pair of songs from the American musical theater-- One, from A Chorus Line and The Entertainer, from The Sting.

An Entertainer he was.
