Coming to Rotary weekly for a dose of happiness is a very good thing…and today we had a program that demonstrated why “Joy Is An Inside Job” .This special day, devoted to our members’ employees and staff members, was uplifting in its message. Looking Pre-Presidential, Dick Troncone took a very deep breath and hit the bell calling us to order. His introduction of new member, Linda Markiewicz led us to her inspirational moment urging us to “trust ourselves and not a GPS”. Steve Hubbard carried us thru in song without musical accompaniment as the piano bandits had struck again. Bert Wahlen’s news-of-the-day noted that the U.S.-captured 18-year-old Somalian pirate had always wanted to visit New York City…and now he is our very expensive guest.
Jim Groen’s new member introduction of his boss, Todd Jackson, was an exercise in judicious wording as he apparently wants to keep his job in the remodeling business. Welcome, Todd! Jeanne Schmelzer was recognized for her generosity to our club and Rotary International by achieving a multiple Paul Harris Fellowship. Debe Berger would like your body (but in the afternoons only) on May12 and May 19. She is recruiting members to be judges for the San Diego High School Senior Exhibitions.
Wearing a T-Shirt that is already showing signs of a “Rotarian At Work”, Lewis Linson reminded us that this Saturday is the event date. Get moving. Sign up.
Gingerly, and almost sympathetically, Troncone gave a $250 fine to Kobe Bogaert for shilling for a raffle benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities. (Eventually, you’ll find fining fun, Dick).
Our Chair of the Day, the always elegant Nancy Scott, introduced a visiting Rotarian from La Jolla. (You cannot help but laugh thinking of Nancy as a partner in Easy 8 Hotels. “Soaps on Ropes” says it all). Nancy went on to honor the longest and shortest-term employees of Rotarians. President Stan’s two week administrative assistant won hands down for holding on for 10 days. Nancy then gave high praise to our guest speaker. Sandi Kimmel found long ago that corporate life did not fulfill her needs. She discovered her joy in singing, composing and being a positive force in life. She writes and performs songs that create passion, attitude, emotion, energy and enthusiasm. She spoke about “happiness robbers”…how blaming others, complaining, worrying and holding grudges destroys the potential for well-being. There is a “science of happiness” that states that 50% of happiness is genetically determined; the other 50% is acquired by habits and beliefs. So smile…it’s contagious!
