After President Stan Hartman called the meeting to order and Rudi Brewster gave the inspirational moment, we all stood in silent amazement at the beautiful voice of Timyra-Joi Beatty, a 10 year-old wunderkind, as she sang “The Star Spangled Banner.”
A number of very active Rotarians then gave plugs for their favorite programs: Dick Troncone for the District Assembly, Mar 21; Michelle Candland for Camp Enterprise, Mar 26-28; Debe Berger for the Youth Enrichment Steering (YES) Committee; and Jim Groen for Rotarians at Work Day, April 25.
That was followed quickly by a hit parade of fines: Jen Martino for being a Power Couple in the SD Business Journal with her husband, Chris; Maureen Stapleton for putting doorknob hangers on our tables that encourage water conservation; Linda Stirling and John Folsom for making Barron’s Top 1,000 Financial Advisers (#60 & #43, respectively); and Mike Morton for 40 years of service to the community through his Brigantine family of restaurants. Mike celebrated the fine by placing bottles of a Brigantine reserve chardonnay on each table. That might explain some of the later rowdy behavior at some of the tables.
Prez Stan served as our Chair of the Day and he introduced the visiting Rotarian who had traveled the farthest to attend our meeting: Jill King, the president of the Rotary Club of Rancho Santa Fe. Started told Jill he had considered giving her an insurance policy but he wisely changed that gift into a bottle of the Brig chardonnay. Jill said she would definitely make-up with us again!
Bert Wahlen served as emcee for our “Music is Magic” program. Did you know that:
Medical research has demonstrated the benefits of listening to music in the healing process?
Music lessons help kids do better in school?Exercising and music increase cardiac rehabilitation?
I feel healthier and smarter already.
Paul Hartley III started us off playing his guitar and singing a rousing rendition of “Margaritaville”, making all of the Rotary parrottheads very proud. Having grown up in Hoboken, NJ (really) I was a little partial to Tom Blair’s wonderful take on Frank Sinatra’s “Falling in Love with Love”, “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Mack the Knife.” The guy’s good!
And then Timyra-Joi, a homegrown talent with an already impressive resume, belted out “Home” and “What a Wonderful World.” Kudos to the very talented Paul, Tom, Timyra-Joi and our piano accompanist, Tommy Gannon.
It was a wonderful relaxing program. Hey, when did we get to be the 3rd largest Rotary Club in the world?? That’s reason to celebrate, too.
