It was another beautiful day on the Bay as we got our meeting of America’s Finest Rotary Club in before the promised rainstorm. PRESIDENT STAN brought us to order and we had KATIE FULHORST give a wonderful poem as our Inspirational Moment. SHELLY BROCKETT and LARRY SHOWLEY lead us in “AMERICA” and BERT gave us more news than we wanted.

Suddenly, a large gang of scruffy looking men (and a few ladies) barged into the room from the rear doors. PAT CROWELL led in the group that has built clinics, schools and medical facilities in the Tijuana neighborhoods for these past many years. Pat and his crew were there to congratulate and on behalf of us all, to thank their leader, DICK JACKSON. Dick is service above self personified and it was great to see him recognized for all the wonderful work he has lead for so many folks so less fortunate.

SHANDON HARBOUR introduced our visiting students from University City High followed by DAVID OATES announcing a Young Rotarians’ event at the Karl Strauss Brewery in Sorrento Mesa. SUZY SPAFFORD and yours truly then invited everyone to join us next week for a very special Sweethearts’ Day celebration. Lots of work has gone into this event and it promises to be a terrific meeting.

RICHARD COUTTS urged us all to remember our dedication to help eradicate polio and our Club pledge over the next 3 years. If you are not already on board, please do so. There are only 4 nations in the world that still have active polio cases. What a change from when many of us were young.

BOB ARNHYM auctioned off his wonderful tickets to the Opera for the Diana Venable Scholarship Fund and BONNIE SCHWARTZ reminded us of the District Council event next week with Pat Crowell. CHRIS CRAMER and PAUL PALMER were fined for doing well and doing good.

Chair of the Day was President-Elect DICK TRONCONE. After acknowledging our visitors, he introduced the program, our own STEVE CUSHMAN and the Unified Port District.

Steve had a great program that included several of the key members of the Port District including representatives from Real Estate, Finance, Chief of the Harbor Police and presentations on Imports and the conservation efforts in which the Port engages. This is a great story and one of San Diego’s true successes. Way too many stats to give in this limited space but Steve said that they are going to be presenting this around the county. If you missed, see it somewhere! You can hear the program on our website via the Newsletter section. Once again, our best programs come from within!
