SAN DIEGO ROTARY BRINGS HELP TO THE NEEDY IN ENSENADA WITH THE 2009 ‘FISH ACROSS THE BORDER’ PROJECT.

JANUARY 9-11, 2009

ENSENADA – San Diego Rotarians joined Rotarians from Avalon, Vista and Montebello and traveled to Ensenada to assist the Ensenada Centenaria Rotary Club in distributing blankets and bags of staple food items to the neediest families in the greater Ensenada area. For the past 15 years San Diego has worked with the San Diego long range sportfishing fleet to encourage the donation of tuna which at years’ end is exchanged for cases of canned tuna. This year 250 cases of tuna was delivered to the Ensenada Rotary Club and, along with $1,500.00 from San Diego Rotary, was made available to fill large bags with tuna, cooking oil, beans, rice, cookies, oatmeal, etc. The bags were filled with enough staples to sustain a family of four for a week.

On Friday, Jan. 9th, the Rotarians worked for over 3 hours to complete the filling of the bags, which were then loaded into pick-ups and SUVs, and along with blankets made ready for the following morning’s distribution. On Saturday morning, California and Ensenada Rotarians finished loading vehicles with food bags and blankets and branched out to some of the most impoverished settlements in the greater Ensenada area and provided much needed protein and warmth to some very appreciative families. The Ensenada Rotary had identified the most needy families earlier, and each member of the Ensenada club took a few southern California Rotarians under their wing to head off to one of twelve areas identified earlier.

Following the conclusion of a job well done the Rotarians retired to the home of Dr. Eloy Perez, long time Ensenada Rotarian, and celebrated another successful year of helping families that are struggling to survive. The motto of Rotary, “Service Above Self”, was the keyword of this group of good Samaritans, and the result was that over 900 families will have a little healthier and warmer winter! We all returned home Sunday morning.

The commitment of the Ensenada Centenaria Rotary Club is remarkable, and they are constantly working to make life a little better for the many less fortunate families and their children in the Baja area. We in San Diego Rotary applaud them and are very pleased to have some small part in their efforts!
