President Dick Troncone rang our starting bell extra early today because of our special program: the KPBS Editors’ Roundtable. Our 12:10 PM start at the Sheraton West saw many members coming in to fill up the room after they fought their way through the heavy traffic on Harbor Drive and at the Sheraton East event.
Bruce Drake provided the Inspirational Moment by leading us in the Boy Scout Law in honor of the Centennial Anniversary of the Boy Scouts. Bruce was also on hand to collect our donations to the Boy Scouts’ food drive. Ever-young Bill Dick led us in the “Star Spangled Banner” accompanied by sunny Suzy Spafford.
Janie Davis presented the Club 33 History Minute from 1951 when we were celebrating our 40th Anniversary. The Charter Members in attendance remarked that lunch prices had increased from $1 to $3.50 during that time span. Janie also gave us the latest news and market data. Jolly Steve Hubbard introduced the visiting students and counselor from San Diego High School along with the sponsoring Rotarians at their table.
Larry Clemens introduced himself as our newest member thanks to sponsors Larry Stirling, Ian Gill and Perry Dealy. See page 3 for more information about Larry. Dick then asked Chair of the Day Tom Karlo to come to the podium and Tom presented our visiting Rotarian from the LA area with a KPBS bag full of gifts. Tom introduced Gloria Penner, Senior Political Correspondent and Host of Editors’ Round Table and San Diego Week for KPBS.
Gloria presented today’s panel of Editors: Scott Lewis, CEO of Voice of San Diego, Barbara Bry, Associate Publisher of San Diego News Network and Dr. John Warren, Publisher of San Diego Voice & Viewpoint. They launched into a 50-minute program split into segments discussing local political races, interesting ballot measures and education.
Club 33 members asked questions to provide the audience for the broadcast of the program at 9 AM Friday and 6 AM Sunday on KPBS radio, 89.5 FM. You can also listen to our entire meeting by playing the audio file posted on our website’s Newsletter page. See you next week!
