2010 Economic Forecast: Stirling and Holland
January 7, 2010

President Dick Troncone called us to order in the lovely Balboa Park Club on a beautiful January day. Members enjoyed the easy access to the BPC because of the ample nearby parking and the price was right, too—FREE! The Park was a wonderful setting for our meeting.

We started early to allow plenty of time for our annual Economic Forecast program. New member April Langwell inspired us with her words about the value of faith, and Tom Blair led us in “America the Beautiful” accompanied by Greg Zinser on the piano. George Alexander recalled for us what Club 33 was like in 1964—Jim Haugh was president of our club, Jack Murphy Stadium opened, Alex Karras was in the NFL, and President Truman was turning the reins over to Eisenhower. George then gave us the news. Dick introduced new members Peter MacCracken and Michael Rosenberg.

Tom Karlo announced a Grotarian event on February 16 at San Diego State. Starting at 6 PM, we will meet at the new SDSU Alumni Center for fellowship, food and drink and then go to a women’s basketball game in Viejas Arena. Grotarians, this is a great chance to meet one of your blue badge requirements. Please sign up at www.rotary33.org or call our office.

Camp Enterprise Chair Wayne Goodermote asked us to let him know of legacies for this year. If you have children or grandchildren that are juniors in high school now, get his or her name to Wayne. Tom Gehring asked for you to come up with projects for Rotarians at Work. See page 4 of this issue for the details. Rotarians at Work day will be on April 24.

President Dick introduced Bert Wahlen as Chair of the Day of our twentieth annual Economic Forecast meeting. Bert welcomed two Rotarians from Rochester, Minn. as the visitors from the farthest and he presented them with a $100 gift certificate to the Westgate Hotel courtesy of Richard Cox, General Manager. Assistant District Governor Dan Kessler was also visiting.

Bert presented our two panelists, Bill Holland and Linda Stirling. Bill recapped last year in the markets with these words, “The recession is over, but nobody believes it. 2009 was the best year of the decade.” Linda sees cognitive dissonance—the huge deficit, high prices for gold, a soft dollar, and Wall Street upbeat.

The forecasts for the coming year? Bill sees a year-end Dow at 14,500; Linda and Don Bauder both see it at 12,000. Bill’s stock picks for 2010 are Boeing and Blackstone. Linda’s are Johnson Controls and Tellabs. Don’s are Callaway Golf and Wilmington Trust.
