It was a crisp, clear beautiful San Diego winter day when President Dick Troncone gaveled us to order. Chris Elliott’s inspirational message spoke to the importance of attitude, gratitude, love, and friendship. Maestro Jack Anthony implored the sopranos in the audience to volunteer themselves, their friends, family, and neighbors for the holiday program. He and Joe Zakowski then led us in song. Talented tonsils, Bert Wahlen, gave us our weekly news update and the Club’s history minute.
Students from Patrick Henry High School were introduced by Jay Arnett. Go Patriots! Our newest member, Todd Poling, profiled himself and thanked sponsors Keith McKenzie, John Van Deusen and Steve Bond. Way to go, Greg Pyke, for achieving your Blue Badge status.
Next Thursday is our annual tribute to the late Club 33 Rotarian Diana Venable for all the wonderful work she did for children. Nancy Scott reminded us that little can be more important than changing the life of a child in need? And the proceeds from next week’s auction will do just that. So arrive early with your spirit of giving and generosity firmly intact, and join in the spirited bidding. There are some great auction items for the taking.
What is April 24, 2010? It’s a date to put in your calendar to enjoy Rotarians at Work Day. Bob Borgman, Michelle Candland, and Tom Gehring want you to be involved in one of the many planned projects. They are also seeking additional projects for non-profit organizations so go on-line to rotary33.org and click on Project Request for more information.
Congratulations to Dr Doug Arbon as this year’s recipient of the MacLaggan Award. Past prez Fred Frye outlined the many volunteer accomplishments of this outstanding Rotarian, including being a founding father of the MOST program. Doug received a very well deserved standing ovation from an audience of appreciative Rotarians.
Join our expert fisherman, Bob Fletcher, for this year's 'Fish Across the Border’ Expedition the weekend of January 8-10. On-line registration is at rotary33.org – Events.
The effervescent Pauline Hill stressed the important of RSVP’ing on-line at rotary33.org – Events- for two usually sold-out events – our Holiday Program on December 17th at the Sheraton East and the Annual Economic Forecast on January 7th at the Balboa Park Club. (MAKE A NOTE OF THIS!!!) Due to space constraints, everyone must register so we have a correct count.
Fines were launched on Frank Baldwin as he asked us to participate in SAY (Social Advocates for Youth) and their Adopt-a-Family program. Contact tori@saysandiego.org to get involved. Reid Carr of Red Door Interactive found a good turn – or two company awards that made the newspaper – never goes unnoticed or un-fined. Congratulations, Reid.
Karen Hutchens then introduced a very informative and timely program on the status of Healthcare Reform. Thanks go to Club 33 Rotarian and Sharp Healthcare’s president and CEO, Mike Murphy, for actually making this complex, confusing topic a bit more palatable. Mike’s presentation outlined the differences in Senate proposal HR 3590 and House proposal HR 3962 and can be found in the News Section on our website. Bottom line – doing nothing is not an option. Everyone is a stakeholder in this important discussion and not everyone will be happy with a final product if Congress can compromise on a final bill to send to the President. Mike’s quote by Adam Fein said it all, “If you use a crystal ball, be prepared to eat glass.”
