Judge Woody Clarke - Justice and DNA
November 5, 2009

President Dick Troncone welcomed the visiting Rotaractors, students, guests and members to an exciting meeting full of plans for Club 33’s future. Bob Bauchman inspired us to remember the importance of the upcoming Veterans’ Day. Bill Dick led us in song along with pianist Suzy Spafford. Bert Wahlen reminded us, in his “club history minute”, that 60 years ago a fine for not knowing the answers to the weekly Rotary Quiz was all of $2.00. Birthday Girl Lisa Miller introduced the visiting students from Mira Mesa High School. Red-to-Blue Badgers Bruce Drake and Andy Liska were congratulated for their efforts to become involved quickly in the club’s many worthy activities.

Peter Mac Laggan must be thrilled to start groundbreaking today on his long fought for desalination water project after the courts cleared the final hurdles. Bob Witty wittedly awarded ED Bruce Hunt this year’s Tennis Trophy. Jen Martino reminded young (at heart) Grotarians that next week’s fun time is in Solana Beach. Ben Clay and Sandy Mayberry, chairs of the Centennial Committee, took to the podium to bring us news of “The Next 100 Years”. Our 2011-2012 celebrations will include honoring our traditions, our Founders, our projects over the past century as well as the District that includes all of our ‘children’…clubs that were spawned by us. We will highlight all of their many accomplishments throughout the year. Both Joyce Glaser and Craig Evanco will have major leadership positions planning events that will include different venues such as the Summer Pops. The thought of a Road Trip via bus with Pat Crowell to visit El Centro and the Blue Angels is certainly enough to turn up the fun dial. So get ready…and think about ideas to help this hardworking committee make this important year special.

Michelle Candland, channeling Wayne Goodermote, announced that the 35th Camp Enterprise planning is underway (April 15-17).You can help by volunteering to be on the sub-committee that recruits the students. Remember to call if you have a legacy student in your family that would like to attend. Steve Hubbard reminded us that the Dec17th Holiday Program starts rehearsals Nov 23. Bill McDade took a fine for promoting the Nov 20th Boy Scouts Gala honoring William McColl. Troy Sears made a generous offer to sail people on the America’s Stars and Stripes this Sunday for their contributions to the Coast Guard Relief Fund. This will aid the families that lost loved ones last week in the air crash off San Diego.

COD Kevin Enright introduced Judge Woody Clarke who gave a fascinating as well as entertaining program on DNA in several high profile murder cases including OJ Simpson. The use of DNA forensically has brought many criminals to justice over the past 15 years, but it has also been used to exonerate more than 250 people including some that were on death row. California has a progressive DNA data base system that includes anyone arrested for a felony. This has assisted in convicting the guilty in previously cold cases. Judge Clarke’s new book, “Justice and Science” was recently released.

Remember to support the Club 33 Auction by bringing your fine wines next week… someone will enjoy drinking your gifts while supporting Diana’s Scholarship Fund.
