The annual visit by our District Governor is always a special event. We were blessed by beautiful weather and many gathered for the Club Assembly before the regular meeting. In years past, we have had presentations by the Chair of each committee. However, since our committees are now 57 in number, President Dick Troncone used a sampling and had 12 committees make verbal reports with the rest submitting theirs in writing. We have more committees by far than the average club throughout the world has members. So many ways to practice “Service Above Self.”
Larry Showley entertained us all with music prior to the bell. The meeting began with Ed Ecker giving us the Inspirational Moment followed by Ed Glazener and Larry leading us in “God Bless America.” All the day’s news and a historical minute from 1914 were proclaimed by George Alexander.
New Paul Harris Fellows, Joe Farrage, Larry Kuntz, and Marc Tarasuck were “pinned” by President Dick and DG Marge Cole. Thanks for your contributions. Past Prez Stan Hartman announced that the team that did such yeoman (yeoperson?) work on the Bylaws revision had all been awarded additional Paul Harris Fellowships. They are Sandy Mayberry, Bob Russell, Peter Duncan, Tyler Cramer, and Al Harutunian. What a nice way to thank them for an incredible job!
Bob Fletcher presented the Big Fish Award to 6 time winner G.T. Frost Jr. Jen Martino then announced the upcoming Young Rotarian event and Michelle Candland promoted the 2010 Rotarians at Work Day with Jim Hughes and Andy Fichthorn. Kids and grandkids were invited to join in the festivities of the Holiday Program by Suzy Spafford and Peter Duncan then told us about the Diana Venable Scholarship program and the Rotary Auction that helps fund it. Natasha (there is only one!) was fined for publishing her 18th book and Michael Jones had his pockets picked for the Maritime Gala. Natasha observed that if 167 of us bought the book it would help her offset the fine.
As is the custom, President Dick was also Chair this day and introduced our visitors. The one traveling the farthest was from Germany and he received Dick’s gift. Dick then introduced our Speaker and District Governor, Marge Cole.
DG Marge explained how she was first introduced to Rotary by attending our Camp Enterprise as a teacher. She joined Rotary when she a school principal and has never looked back. We went with her on a brief whirlwind tour to see some of the wonderful projects our Rotary dollars and actions support though out the world. Water well projects in Africa, schools in Ecuador and Central Mexico and Polio Plus immunization in India and then back to San Diego all over lunch! The future of Rotary is in our hands indeed.
