President Dick Troncone called us to order by reading the license plate of a Mercedes that someone had left running in the parking lot. I guess someone was planning on scooting really early. Dick then gave us his favorite Groucho Marx quote, “I’ve had a perfect afternoon and this wasn’t it,” and we were on a roll from there.
Frank Baldwin told us a story about a truly inspirational individual and revealed at the end that it was none other than Walter Lam, our member since May 09. Ed Glazener and Larry Showley followed and teamed up to lead us in “America the Beautiful.” Dick channeled Groucho and skipped Janie Davis by going right to a “Thank You” to the Brown Bag Lunch team led by Jerry Doran. Irene McCormack, our newest member, then came to the podium and provided the Club with a delightful self-introduction. Dick finally called Janie up to do the Club 33 History Minute from 1947 and the “late” news about an “au naturale” burglar among other snippets.
Dick maintained the media theme and played a commercial for the upcoming Metro Regional Council meeting on Oct. 15 at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse. Jack Anthony continued the entertainment theme and announced an invitation for kids and grandkids to come to the Club 33 Holiday Meeting on Dec. 17. Turn in your names to Michele Candland. Bob Witty took his turn to plug the upcoming tennis tournament on Oct. 24 for members, families and ringers, I mean, friends. Vern Aguirre has won the trophy four consecutive times. Dick did experience a perfect afternoon as he went three-for-three on fines of $250 each for Jill Borg-Spitzer, Run For the Hungry on Thanksgiving; Roger Haines, Water for Sudan; and Fred Baranowski, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes for the YWCA.
Dick then introduced Chair of the Day and PP, Mark Trotter, elocutionist extraordinaire, who dispatched his COD duties with two visiting Rotarians. Mark then introduced Rev. Canon Mary Moreno-Richardson of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral where she serves as chaplain for victims of human trafficking. The Reverend brought the plight of over 1,000,000 girls, boys and women who are annually kidnapped, abused and prostituted right to our doorstep. She related three different stories about young San Diego women who had been kidnapped and used in the most degrading way before each had escaped. There is help for these mistreated individuals but it takes a lot of care and time to return to “normal.”
Dick brought our weekly gathering to a close after he announced that Ollie James and Harry Cook had both passed away recently and that their services were earlier today.
