The Ailing American Healthcare System - Technology to the Rescue
Sept 3, 2009

President Dick Troncone called the meeting to order and remarked, “I thought San Diego was known for dry heat.” Roberta Spoon gave the inspirational moment reminding us why we pay tribute to all workers on Labor Day. Thank you to Steve Hubbard and Greg Zinser for leading us in a moving performance of “America the Beautiful.” Bert Wahlen then reported the latest Club 33 History Minute and the news including a new cocktail, the Obama-rita. Past President Stan Hartman announced our next Board election date for December 9 and asked members interested in serving to contact him. Jerry Doran described the October 1st Brown Bag luncheon and asked for sign ups at your favorite Rotary work place. There will be no meeting at the Sheraton that day because of the brown bag lunches which will be supplied by Rick Richards. Nancy Scott and Janie Davies promoted a Club 33 fellowship opportunity on Sat., October 17th at Rancho La Puerta. There is limited space so call RLP at 877.440.7778 to reserve you place. Then email Nancy at ljtoots1@aol.com so she can keep count.

President Dick introduced fellow SAE fraternity brother Tom Gable, our Chair of the Day. (I’m married to an SAE member and I’m still waiting to learn the secret handshake.)

Tom introduced Camille Sobrian, President of Wireless-Life Sciences Alliance. Her topic was how the wireless industry can make healthcare:

---more efficient

---more cost effective

---capable of reaching more people and places

We’re all heard the dire condition of our healthcare and medical system so we don’t need to review it. Suffice it to say, Camille discussed solutions for at least some of the issues. For example, she spoke about smart pills for TB, Crohn’s Disease and heart failure. Basically, you’re swallowing a tiny, tiny computer. Really. Wait there’s more…..Ultrasound imaging with a smart phone? You bet! Want to know instantaneously how many calories you just ate? Actually, no.

Another benefit is that wireless technology can save a lot of money – billions of dollars—by monitoring chronic diseases. That sounds good. San Diego turns out to be the perfect place to create a Wireless-Life Sciences Alliance because of our many leading edge communication and biotech companies. The Alliance enables leaders in these fields to come together, collaborate and find solutions to some of the major healthcare issues facing us.

Geri Warnke closed our meeting by giving a moving eulogy for Herman Gadon, who was an incredibly wonderful, brilliant and kind man and by calling for support for Natasha Josefowitz. He will be greatly missed.
