Michael Sise, M.D., SD's Trauma System
July 16, 2009

President Dick Troncone called the meeting to order and turned the microphone over to David Kahn for the Inspirational Moment. David related the lessons he learned while working on the New Orleans museum exhibit of Hurricane Katrina. Many victims of Katrina were asked if they needed help and they replied, “No, we’re doing fine. Thank you.” even while they were working to remove the mud out of their homes.

George Harris, accompanied by Suzy Spafford, led us in The Star Spangled Banner. George took a $125 fine in the process for not showing up last week to lead the singing. Before giving us his usual professional summary of the news, Bert Wahlen gave us a short history lesson to help us prepare for our Centennial Year in 2011-12. He told us about the revitalizing of Alcazar Gardens by Club 33 led by Phil Klauber. On this day in 1969, the Apollo 11 space craft landed on the moon.

In what may be the beginning of a new tradition, new members Paul Byrne, “Information Technology Management,” and Ed Ecker, “Office Products,” introduced themselves. Both are alumni of SDSU as is Prez Dick. Jim Groen is asking for a few Rotarians to help rebuild some fencing this Saturday from 8:30 to noon at the “Bridge” Youth Home. Lyle Butler told us about our day at the races on August 5 so call the office for tickets because it is close to a sell out.

Skip Hymes reported on his trip to Waterfall King Salmon Resort in Alaska. He won a tournament there with a 43.6 pound catch-that’s one fish!-and collected $11,000 in prizes. President Dick then collected $250 for the Club.

Chair of the Day Nikki Clay was to introduce our visiting Rotarians but there weren’t any so she had no one to give her gifts to. She did introduce our own Mike Sise, M.D., who was making a repeat performance as our program. Prez Dick fined Mike $250 for putting Scripps Mercy Hospital Trauma Services brochures on the table so Mike started his presentation by saying he’s a paid speaker because he paid to speak.

Mike talked about the trauma centers in San Diego and how they function. In 1982, 20 percent of trauma deaths were preventable but by last year, that figure was 2.7 percent. The difference came from the change in the way trauma patients are treated. Each major war has contributed to the improvement process.

Watch your Rotator carefully for the location of our next meeting. Anyone can go to the wrong hotel if they’re not careful even the President of the club!
